Known for its stunning natural beauty, Squamish is surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers, and sea, with breathtaking views from every angle. And located right on the Sea to Sky Highway (BC-99) is the small yet stunning Murrin Provincial Park, which offers visitors a range of outdoor activities, from hiking and fishing to climbing and biking.

For a long time, Murrin Park went unnoticed by many, overshadowed by other more famous provincial parks in the region. But since we discovered it and explored its trails, we’ve fallen in love with it, making it one of our favorite hikes.

In Murrin Park, you’ll find three different trails to explore: the Browning Lake Trail, the Murrin Loop Trail, and the Jurassic Ridge Trail. Each trail offers its own unique challenges and stunning views, from easy lake walks to breathtaking panoramic vistas of the islands and sea.

But it’s not just the trails that make Murrin Park so special. The park also features picnic tables and restrooms, making it the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch or take a break from your outdoor adventures.

Just be sure to plan ahead and arrive early, as the park’s small parking lot tends to fill up quickly, especially during the summer months. And remember, Murrin Park gate is open from 7am to 10pm, so plan your visit accordingly.

Murrin Park is located less than an hour’s drive away from Vancouver. Nestled in the stunning natural beauty of Squamish, BC, Murrin Park offers visitors a chance to connect with nature and explore its trails, lakes, and mountains.

And getting to Murrin Park is easier than you might think. Just drive on the Sea to Sky Highway (BC-99), one of the most scenic roads in the world, and follow the well-signposted signs towards Murrin Park. The park is conveniently located on the left side of the road, so you won’t have to worry about missing it.

As you drive along the Sea to Sky Highway, take in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and sea, and prepare to be amazed by the natural beauty of Squamish. And before you know it, you’ll have arrived at Murrin Park, ready to explore its trails and enjoy its peaceful lakeside setting.

It’s a well-maintained trail perfect for wheelchair users, strollers, and anyone looking for an easy walk around the lake.

The trail is only 1km long and has no elevation, making it super easy and accessible for anyone looking to enjoy the natural beauty of Murrin Park without the physical exertion of a hike. And on hot days, the inviting lake water is the perfect place to take a refreshing dip and cool off.

But the trail is more than just a walk around the lake. It’s also home to picnic tables and restrooms, making it the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing lunch or take a break from your outdoor adventures.

With a 6km round trip, this trail offers hikers the opportunity to experience the stunning natural beauty of Murrin Park, while also providing a challenging climb up rocky terrain.

To start the trail, head towards the picnic tables where you’ll find the signposting the beginning of the trail. The initial section of the trail is a quick climb up rocky terrain, but the breathtaking views make it all worth it. As you continue up the mountain, be sure to turn right at the intersection and head towards the Loop Trail and Quercus Viewpoint. Keep an eye out for the orange marker in one of the trees on the path ahead.

After a short climb, you’ll reach a climbing wall called “The Commonwealth.” Go left at the junction and continue up the wooden stairs, following the trail as it goes up.

Once you reach the summit of this part of the trail, get ready for your first epic glimpse of the islands and sea. The park has even placed a wooden bench on top of the rocks, so hikers can sit and take in the spectacular beauty of the site.

Jurassic Ridge Trail

Jurassic Ridge Trail ad 1.5km onto the Murrin Loop Trail and we considered it a moderate hike.

The trail is well signposted, with orange markers on the trees guiding you along the way. Be prepared for sections that require you to use the ropes installed by the park itself to help you climb to the summit. But trust us, every effort will be worth it when you reach the top and take in the breathtaking panoramic view of the islands, mountains, and sea.

As you make your way back down, be extra careful as there are several steep sections with ropes to help you descend.

After a period of descent, you’ll come across a staircase in the rock. Go down and join the Loop Trail, following the orange markers to ensure you stay on the right path.

The trail becomes less rocky as it gradually descends and you’ll eventually arrive at an overlook with a bench and a sign stating that the trail opened in September 2014. From there, continue downhill until you reach Lake Browning where the trail started.

But before embarking on this challenging hike, make sure to check the weather forecast and bring the 10 essential items in your backpack. And as always, leave no trash on the trail and leave a trip plan.
